Minor Arcana Book Borders - Wands

Since I'm mostly glued to an easy chair these days, I've had lots of time to work on ink drawings. I figured it's a good time to get started on the borders for the Minor Arcana book. Here's the borders for the Wands so far. Slightly different format from the Major Arcana book. I wanted some variety for myself!

As for the Minors book, I'm currently pondering what to do with it. Since there are many more minor cards than majors, there's a lot more material to squeeze in.

So, Question:

Would you be interested in a single volume (~150 pages maybe, with about 10 pages of sketches per suit, instead of the dedicated 2 pages per card that the majors had) of all four minor suits and be approximately $50.00, or I could split it up further into two volumes of two minor suits each of $35.00 (and maintain the two pages of sketches per card)?

Pricing is still a guess for the single large book as I've yet to get a quote from a printer for that.

  1. These are wonderful!

I want to say keep them together. Unless you can do a separate book for each suit - that is if they can be inexpensive enough to get all four for a reasonable total price (like around $15-$20 each). It seems rather disjointed to have two and two, even though I'd hate to miss any of your art work.

Are you sure you cannot make a longer book?

  2. Yeah, I could do 4 for $20.00 each probably. So that's an option too.

  3. :D Just do it in one big book! It's already on my Christmas List :D

  4. Oh, no way it'll be out by Christmas. It'll take me at least that long just to do the borders, and then there's all the layout and text. Then once that's set, the printer takes approximately 8 weeks. I'm thinking sometime mid next year. Might be about the time when the deck is released.

  5. Lovely drawings! Like I said on FB I'll get them no matter what. But, I do like the four book option as well as the two book option.

  7. The more the merrier. Does this mean that we will need to purchase 2 books that accompany your card deck? One to read the majors and one to read the minors?

  8. As a matter of selling points, I personally found the most wonderful thing about your Major Arcana book to be the discussion of your sketches, why you made the decision to change certain things or use certain concepts, and seeing how the symbolism and figures evolved.

If you can have more sketches, than by all means please do include as many as possible! If that means having a longer book or breaking this project into 4 inexpensive books or 2 large parts, than I'm for it! Perhaps you could release paperback versions of the individual books for each suit, with a large collected hardcover to come later, if at all possible?

As for the sketches, they are, as always, beautiful and full of life and movement. Can't wait to see how you integrate them with the text!

  9. Beweave - not at all, these books are art books that feature the full color, large format reproductions of all the cards, along with insights into the symbolism and creation of the imagery. They are not necessary though as the deck will come with a companion booklet that will contain all relevant information needed to read with the deck.

  10. Angela - thanks for the input, I will take that into consideration! I will have to see how much sketch material I have for these as well, and that will probably play a part in deciding what to do.

  11. I personally would like the detail in these books that you put on the major arcana. I'm getting the major arcana for Christmas and one of the reasons I'm so excited is because of the way it focuses on each card.

I'd buy it in four separate books, personally for this fact. If you did it in two though, If you put the masculine suits together and the feminine one I think it would be all right.

P.S. I love these borders, they make me happy.

  12. Honestly, I'll probably just buy anything you make! Also, I thought I saw a Dreamscapes II plan--am I dreaming???

  13. Yeah, Dreamscapes II should be out early/mid 2010 as well. I don't have a specific date yet from the publisher. You can see a few previews of it in previous blog entries: http://shadowscapes-stephanielaw.blogspot.com/search/label/dreamscapes

  14. I would definitely pay for 2 volumes if that means getting 2 pages per card!

  15. Firstly, congratulations on the arrival of Claire!

Secondly, I like the idea of one volume and keeping all the art pertaining to the Minor Arcana cards together. I recently received the Major Arcana and it did not disappoint! While I adore the final cards featured, I really found myself intrigued and fascinated by the sketches and the journey involved in reaching the final evolution of each piece. The more sketches, the merrier! - Tracy Calvert.

  16. Hmmmmm.....You've got a lot of info to pack in so maybe 2 books would be good. I like the idea someone else had of one feminine and one masculine, but that may not work for you.

Either way, I so want these books...your images ALWAYS inspire me!

  17. Seeing these all at once is just amazing. On deviantart I said it once, but this proves how ink-work are perfectly fine and beautiful as they are. Not all need to be colored in...I'd have these no other way. <3
